Living with cloth

Living a cleaner life

In this article we will meet Emma, a Military wife and cloth Mama who is passionate about living a low tox life! With the recent COVID 19 pandemic she’s been working hard to help families create a healthy and safe home through the help of essential oils. Read on to hear all about her life and learn some wonderful tips, tricks, and recipes for living a healthier life!
Meet Emma!

Emma lives with her husband, daughter and pup in Sydney, Australia. She’s originally from the gold coast but due to her husband being in the navy, they move frequently.  Before being a full time mum, Emma was a zookeeper! Inspired by her love of animals she’s been dedicated to living an eco conscious lifestyle.

Emma’s cloth journey!

Emma’s approach to cloth would be described as minimalistic and shows what you really need! With one in cloth she has 10 nappies total which is just enough for a day!

Why did you choose cloth?

When we had Isla, I noticed how much waste kids create.  Food, wipes all of it. Cloth meant I could take some of my pre kids values of being eco-friendly into motherhood even though all I wanted was convenience (disposables). After learning that disposables never truly break down in a landfill I knew cloth was the right choice for us. I feel like I’m doing my part for the environment and in particular, its wildlife.  We have destroyed the world’s wildlife by 60% in the last 10 years and being a human being sometimes feels like I’m part of the problem.

Were you ever discouraged from using cloth?

“In times of utter tiredness – on 2 hours sleep nights on end.  Those were the times I had to give myself grace to not have to do the washing and just sleep, and we used disposables”

What compelled you to become a cloth family?

I knew from working within the conservation sector that disposable nappies never fully break down.  I cannot stand the amount of waste we accumulate as people and I felt so awful adding to that just for convenience.  And we are doing washing anyway!

What makes you feel good about using cloth nappies?

Every single one I use we save money and we keep one plastic nappy from the environment.

Why are you so passionate about cloth nappies?

They take minimal extra effort and save money in the long run, even some councils provide a bonus for [people choosing to use them!  It should be the norm, cloth nappies, repairing broken toys and clothes.

Self care

Emma says to find true happiness you must live a life that aligns with your soul.

“Aligning with nature just feels right, feels connected. It feels like it’s the most normal thing in the world to me.” Emma enjoys being one with nature and feels like she is most at home when rooted in nature or surrounded by animals.

* Emma’s tip for slowing down *

“When you feel like you can’t breathe, ground yourself in nature.”

How do you handle the more stressful parts of motherhood?

Community.  Hands down, having people in your corner, other mothers, and especially LIKE MINDED mothers makes all the difference.

PND is a topic I’m SO passionate about! I learnt the hard way, I suffered from PND fairly badly.  We had a bad situation however with multiple stressful moves just months after Isla was born, husband being deployed as he is in the navy leaving me alone and living away from family was very tough.  So, my top tips are ALWAYS making sure you have a support network set up for at least 6 months, or until you are getting regular amounts of sleep.  Sleep accounts for so much of the new-born stress stage. If mothers could just get some sleep, we would all be much healthier!  Monitoring your hormone drops too is massive, as soon as we give birth our progesterone plummets and so does our mood.  I still to this day take a natural progesterone supplement called ‘Progessence Plus’ which is the only USP grade natural progesterone supplement on the market.

Why does mental health matter?

Mums have to fill their tank FIRST.  Not last.

Staying balanced is an important part of mental health.  Being organised helps me, which is no easy task I know.  But making sure the whole family gets the weekly dose of nature is a huge help to balancing out everything else.  I’m also a firm believer in working a job or career you love; your work becomes your life.  It has to set you on fire.

To summarize, Healthy for my family means a low tox home, without any damaging chemicals affecting our wellbeing, lots of fresh food and outdoor time.  Anytime we need mind and body support we look to our essential oils for an answer first.  We find our centre as a unit when we are in nature, especially if we get it all to ourselves like a deserted beach or a national park filled with birdsong.

How have you been dealing with Isolation?

Life has changed for us all!  The perks of online business being one of them – it’s a safe income and one that can be done anywhere.  It sure makes you want to tackle life with both hands tough because it feels time is being wasted. We do feel extremely lucky for many reasons but the fact that my husband can be home is a huge blessing! We are able to spend so much quality time together and for that I’m truly grateful. We’ve been enjoying taking daily walks outside and making upgrades to our home and yard to benefit our little girls’ growing play desires.

How has COVID 19 impacted your cloth experience?

Cloth has been a huge help during this time! It helps when you don’t want to go to the shops and avoid people!  You never run out of nappies – it’s been very handy.

Starting a business as a mom

When did you first become interested in starting your own business?

I started when my child was about 3 months old and I needed a passion outlet and a tribe.  I had been using essential oils for years but I never knew the amazing benefits that would come if I decided to use them to run my own business – it’s been such a rewarding and challenging process.  The personal growth has been just shocking.

What was your background before beginning your business?

I have always worked outside with animals whether that be zookeeping, horse training or working as a diver. I was always involved in the environment.  A big part of my job is educating people on why wildlife and habitat matters, which is one of the reasons I now love my current job so much.  Nature supports all life and using those powerful components within essential oils is just second nature to us now.

What is your favourite part about running your business?

The journey it has taken me on down the low tox path, creating a safer home for my family.

What is your favourite memory relating to your business?

I was on a work call with two women in my team and my dog had a reaction to her vaccination she just got.  I didn’t know what to do. She was clearly in pain, shaking, curled up and eyes closed.  I tried the emergency vet and they just said bring her in but I couldn’t move her.  So, I asked my team who I just happened to be talking to and they recommended a specific essential oil and so I did it.  And low and behold within 20 minutes my dog was fine.  Just with a few drops of an essential oil.  Saved us a very expensive emergency vet trip and lots of stress.

Can you share a customer story that has really touched your heart?

When friends have had kids with horrible rashes ion the bath and I have introduced them to what exactly is in baby bubble bath…one simple switch made bath time a happy routine again without rashes.

What is the ultimate goal for your business?

My business is a willable income, so that means I can gift this team of mine to my daughter and she can keep building and earning from it even after I’m gone.

Where do you see your business in 5 years time?

Hopefully at a point we can live off in a caravan and travel Australia.
